Dolores, the organ, returns to Mission Dolores.

Dolores, an Estey H chapel reed organ is coming home to Mission Dolores Sunday evening for the first time since 2003. Starting at 7 p.m., a concert honoring Dolores’ return to the Mission Dolores Chapel will prove that, in spite of her age, Dolores retains a rich and full voice.  Michael Hendron will play Dolores, as the centerpiece of the concert.

Ten years ago, the organ was retired to storage and replaced by a modest-sized but more sophisticated double manual electronic organ.

While working in the Basilica one day, Peter Bellone, a contractor, noticed a dusty Dolores waiting in a corner.  He knew in an instant it would be perfect for his mother, Patricia Arata.  Jerome Lenk, the director of music and liturgy at Mission Dolores, wanted the instrument to be played and enjoyed, not stored.  Thus, Dolores moved down the Peninsula to the home of Patricia and her friend, Gloria Menconi.  Both gifted musicians played and enjoyed the reed organ. Once again, this wonderful instrument filled a space with joy. With Gloria’s passing, her family wanted Dolores to be with someone who can care for it.

That’s how Dolores found her way to the shop of long-time Mission district resident, Jim Tyler, for a complete rebuild and then back to Mission Dolores.

On Sunday night, Dolores will share the stage with two other historic instruments. Lenk will play a large Estey Reed organ, the current organ for the chapel and Rogil Birco will play the Estey Folder.
