Are you all back yet? It’s always surprising to see how many free parking spots there are in the city during the holidays. I hope you’re enjoying them!

If you’re home and cleaning up holiday decorations, resist the urge to throw your Christmas tree out to the curb yet. It’s too early — SF Appeal reports that curbside tree collection will begin Jan. 3.

In book news, the San Francisco Examiner reports that Raising a Reader, a nonprofit organization that distributes books to young children so their parents can read to them, recently expanded the program to include kindergarten as well as preschool students. A $250,000 grant from the Masons of California will allow the organization to operate the program in 250 kindergartens across the state. From the Examiner:

“It’s not just about reading aloud,” said Ortega kindergarten teacher Cynthia Young, whose students each borrow four books every week. “It’s about getting kids excited about books.”
