A reader sent us this photo of a black Nissan truck parked on Valencia at 21st around 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
He recounted the items he saw in the truck bed: a hacksaw, a broken u-lock and several bicycle wheels, including several that had been sawed apart.
“Its hard to say,” said Officer Albie Esparza. “There’s really nothing illegal about that.”
Esparza went on: “Is that a crime? No. But if there’s more information, then there might be an investigation opened up.”
“How do you know the owner of the truck doesn’t fix bicycles?” asked Sergeant Kevin Healy.
After viewing the photos, Healy wrote in an e-mail to Mission Local, “It looks to me like he is collecting scrap metal…I will still follow up.”

everyone mind your own business and keep voting and entrusting your life to REAL CRIMINALS.
Really? A scrap-metal collector who only collects bicycle parts? That’s awfully over-specialized, considering that scrap-metal collectors will usually take anything that isn’t nailed-down, and quite a few things that are.
A picture of the tag might be a bit more useful then one of the truck bed. If he is a thief, then he’ll be seen again with similar items.
The first thing I thought was “oh, scrap metal recycler”, but really, if they are a bike thief, I’d wouldn’t do anything mean or violent, I’d just want to give them a big hug.
I mean big.
Like, a big, long, hard hug.
