SUMMARY:Manny’s: Interactive Breathing Workshop to Manage Stress and Improve Sleep
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive workshop\, we’re going to make yoga breathing accessible. \nTogether\, we’ll talk through some of the science behind breathing techniques and how to use them to manage stress and anxiety\, boost digestion\, and improve sleep. We’ll then practice the breathing exercises together\, step-by-step. \nParticipants will leave knowing how to use the techniques throughout the day to calm the nervous system\, no matter what environment they’re in. We’ll cap the session at 15 people. \nWhat to wear: Anything you want. If you can breathe while wearing it\, it’ll work 🙂 \nThe one-hour session is led by Meenakshi Dalal\, a certified breath coach. Meenakshi became a breath coach while searching for a way to manage a high-stress job. Incorporating these simple techniques into her daily life helped her immensely. She is also a certified yoga teacher.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Where is Our Economy Now? With SF Controller Wagner & Chief Economist Egan
DESCRIPTION:Join Greg Wagner and Ted Egan in conversation about their roles shaping the future of the City’s economy and what is yet to come. \nSan Francisco’s economic recovery has been at the forefront of the national conversation around our City for years now. But who better to help us truly understand the recovery than the people measuring and shaping it directly? \nSF Controller Greg Wagner and Chief Economist Ted Egan will help us understand where our City sits now. Where are we in the budgetary cycle? How is AI shaping current economic trends? How does the good governance conversation\, like charter reform and commission streamlining\, come into play? And what are risks we’re seeing from the State and Federal levels? \n______________________________ \nGreg Wagner was sworn in for a 10-year term as the Controller for the City and County of San Francisco in February 2024. \nGreg began his career with the City in the Mayor’s Budget Office from 2006 to 2011\, serving as Mayor’s Budget Director under Mayors Gavin Newsom and Ed Lee. As the Mayor’s Budget Director\, Greg led the development and approval of the City’s annual balanced budget through the financially challenging years following the Great Recession. \nPrior to becoming Controller\, Greg served the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) as Chief Financial Officer where he managed a multibillion-dollar budget\, and then as Chief Operating Officer of SFDPH where he oversaw the finances and administrative operations of the City’s largest department\, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG)\, Laguna Honda Hospital\, and a citywide network of primary care\, mental health\, and substance use programs. As both Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of SFDPH\, Greg was crucial in the financial management of key public health and citywide priorities over the last decade\, including San Francisco’s emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was fundamental in managing the capital program to rebuild ZSFG and multiple outpatient service sites\, the implementation of Mental Health SF\, and the City’s implementation of the Affordable Care Act. \nNow\, as the City’s chief financial officer and auditor\, Controller Wagner\, with the support of his team\, is responsible for governance and conduct of key aspects of the City’s financial operations\, including processing payroll for all City employees\, managing the City’s bonds and debt portfolio\, and processing and monitoring the City’s budget. His office is also responsible for providing policy and economic analyses\, estimating the cost of ballot measures\, administering the City’s Whistleblower Program\, and directing performance and financial audits of City activities. \nGreg earned his Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California\, Berkeley. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children. \n______________________________ \nDr. Ted Egan is the Chief Economist of the City and County of San Francisco\, and directs the Office of Economic Analysis in the City Controller’s Office. The office prepares independent economic analysis of major City legislation. \nSince he joined in 2007\, his office has published over 100 economic impact reports on policy issues like the minimum wage\, affordable housing\, taxes and fees\, land use planning\, sporting events\, labor regulation\, and short-term rentals. During this time at the City\, he has served as an expert witness on the economics of same-sex marriage\, and won a Good Government award for his work redesigning the City’s business tax. He currently serves on the Data Users Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. \nBefore joining the City\, he spent ten years working for ICF International\, managing economic development strategy projects across North America\, Europe\, Latin America\, and the Middle East. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley\, and lectured in the Economics and City Planning departments at Berkeley for more than ten years.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Monthly Chocolate Club at Manny's - Let's Explore Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Monthly discussions exploring and enjoying the wonders of chocolate! Bring curiosity and a chocolate to share! \nVenture with us into this endless and delicious topic. \nEach club session is a round table discussion in the Living Room\, at the back tables. \nWhat you bring to the conversation is curiosity and chocolate to share. Your contribution may be a bar or a confection\, a nostalgic favorite\, a sample of a rare cacao\, or even something you dislike and want to learn more about. What is science showing us about phytonutrients that benefit our health and well-being?\n How might we think about chocolate in contemporary culture and our shared human history? The oldest confirmed evidence of cacao use by our ancestors is approximately 5\,000 years ago. Our history and future with chocolate are worth discussing.\n We have a complex language for discussing wine—why not cacao and chocolate? \nWho is David? \nDavid has fifteen years of professional experience and a lifetime of enthusiasm for chocolate. SUMMARY:Manny’s: Why We Suffer and How We Heal with Dr. Suzan Song
DESCRIPTION:Navigating the mental toll of the headlines with UN advisor\, humanitarian psychiatrist Dr. Suzan Song \nStress\, burnout\, and collective anxiety have become the air we breathe – whether from grieving a loved one\, losing a job\, or simply trying to keep up with a world in overdrive. \nDrawing on decades of work with children and adult survivors of war and displacement\, as well as those coping with the routine pressures of professional life and relationships\, Harvard- and Stanford-trained psychiatrist and medical anthropologist Dr. Suzan Song reveals that resilience and navigating instability isn’t about toughness or mindfulness\, but rather three timeless tools that heal the human psyche: narrative\, ritual\, and purpose. She refers to it as the “psychosocial vaccine” and the “three friends of winter\,” a nod to the Asian art motif symbolizing plants that thrive in the harshest winters. \nIn this event\, Dr. Song will translate the human impact beneath several of today’s biggest headlines: the loneliness crisis\, AI and layoff anxiety\, immigration crackdowns\, global displacement\, and more. \nShe is the author of the timely new book WHY WE SUFFER AND HOW WE HEAL: Using Narrative\, Ritual\, and Purpose to Flourish Through Life’s Challenges (Feb 24\, Harmony)\, a groundbreaking\, science-backed accessible roadmap to healing.Dr. Song has advised the United Nations\, U.S. federal agencies\, and Ministries of Health\, and is a frequent voice on NPR\, MSNBC\, and other media outlets. Her message – that healing is not just personal but cultural – is urgent and universal.

Everyone please bring something to contribute to this beautiful community! \nHere are a few infrequently asked questions about chocolate: \n What actually is chocolate?\n Why does chocolate resonate so vividly with us in body\, mind\, and spirit?\n Cacao is called the “Food of the Gods” and is highly nutritious. As a chocolatier\, he makes delightful creations with amazing chocolate in micro-batches and offers them online and at farmers markets. His career in chocolate is rooted in pastry and chocolate production. Working with farmers\, researchers\, chocolate makers\, chefs\, and fellow chocolatiers\, he continually explores and enjoys the culture of chocolate. \nSpace is limited. Please reserve a seat at the table. \nMore information about David and chocolate can be found on his website: https://www.duchocolatier.com/
