Several people stand and observe as a person draws intricate chalk designs on a black wall outdoors. One person sits nearby. The scene takes place on a sunny city sidewalk.

Every few months, a group of artists descends to create artwork on the walls of an old abandoned theater at 18th and Mission streets in San Francisco. Over a full day, they draw, paint and spray new creations across the structure.

I have an office nearby, and often drop by to admire their output.

On May 3, 2025 I took out my iPhone and recorded their work.

Correction (June 5, 2025): According to commenters (see below), it wasn’t a theater (as people around the area told me), it was some kind of retail store.

  1. This building was not theater, rather an Art Moderne appliance store. In old photos it looked like a giant 1950’s stove. Mission Local has writtena bunch of articles about it, you should provide links. There is a lesson here- why were previous owners allowed to progressively ruin this building, with no consequences? At the least, current owners should pay for the artists’ spray paint.
