A group of bicycle riders assaulted a man and a woman near the intersection of 23rd and Valencia streets, according to the San Francisco Police Department, in an incident that was caught on video and shared widely online.

The San Francisco Police Department said it arrested two people in connection to the assault.

Two videos โ€” one from videographer FriscoLive415 and one from Tenderloinactivities โ€” circulating online show a crowd of about 10 people and what appears to be a confrontation at the southeast corner of Valencia and 23rd streets. A woman and a handful of bicycles are also seen on the ground.

About half a dozen men then run west toward an older man who is standing in the middle of Valencia Street. The group grabs the man and brings him down right outside of Buffalo Exchange at 1210 Valencia St. Out of view, they then appear to bludgeon him as he lies on the ground.

A neighbor who lives near the intersection, who wished to stay anonymous for fear of retaliation, said the corner attracts dozens of people on motorbikes every weekend.

โ€œAll those actions happen every weekend because people are drinking at the corner,โ€ said the neighbor.

A merchant who works close to the intersection shared the neighbor’s experience and said people start gathering every Saturday around 4 p.m.

At about 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, San Francisco police officers responded to a call for a robbery near the intersection, according to the police department. Upon arrival, officers found two people suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

A man was arrested at the scene, and another was later apprehended after officers found someone fitting a suspectโ€™s description riding a bicycle south on Mission Street.

Despite multiple calls for the suspect to stop, he continued to flee on his bike, and later on foot, until officers arrested him in the area of 23rd and Valencia streets.

The video below was sent to Mission Local on Wednesday by another eyewitness.

This remains an open and active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411.

  1. Itโ€™s so sad how all over this city, the same relatively small groups of people are allowed go to the same places and do the same sketchy and criminal stuff every day and nothing gets done about it.

    1. The progressive narrative is that addressing with law enforcement these types of people, would be ray cistโ€ฆ.Thatโ€™s a big reason an unstable blow hard like Trump got elected, not just once but twice. Rational people all over world are well aware of San Franciscoโ€™s failed social experiments.

  2. I live there, i witness the weekend mayhem happening there every weekend on most days. People who do side shows, no license plates, park there, organ donors who do wheelies on the bike lane congregate there and take over the street, now younger kids on bicycles, futur organ donors, stop there as well, all of them get their plastic bags filled with 3 types of alcohol from the corner store, mix them in front of the store, which sometimes set up a round table on the street to facilitate the mixing. This is why SF has become a joke. I often witness people drinking the cocktails and getting into their cars, driving for sure intoxicated. I bet underage kids are being sold alcohol there as well..On Mondays the street is littered with empty small plastic bottles..Do the neighborhood a service and send an undercover cop there and do your job.

  3. The article notes that people are always drinking on the corner. There’s a stand set up outside of the Mr Liqour where people drink. I would not be surprised if they sold to underage customers. That store is often set up like a nightclub inside with music blaring.

    1. They are cyclists. Theyโ€™re young folks on bmx and huffy style bikes. None of them have any helmets on, let alone cycling gear. Call them what they are: juvenile delinquents on bikes

  4. My sympathies to the victims as they recover, and I’m very glad the injuries were not life threatening (though it’s still a terrible crime).

I’d like to thank everyone here in advance for not leaving comments blaming everyone in the neighborhood who bicycles for this assault, or blaming it on the bike lane, or other silly things like that. Thank you.

  5. That Mister Liquor store manages to attract the best kind of people. They also do a bang up job decorating the street with ziplocks bags, empty mini bottles of liquor, and empty cans of Red Bull. I bet yโ€™all wish you had upstanding store owners like that.

  6. Do we write “a group of drivers” when folks drive to a place to commit violence? Or is the transportation mode only important when they don’t drive? This article seems to have a casual auto-normativity framing.

    1. +1. Headline is weird and kind of random. I expected to read about vigilante bicyclers giving rough justice to a dangerous driver but no. Most of the punks didn’t seem to have bicycles anyway.

  7. Let’s DONATE to support Bob Henry and celebrate the power of courage & generosity! This GoFundMe link (https://gofund.me/0ec61789 ) aims raise funds (up to $20,000) to help 65-year-young, twice-cancer-survivor and talented photographer, Bob Henry, recover from his serious injuries, rebuild his life & replace his stolen valuable photography equipment โ€” his livelihood. After witnessing the victims being followed, harassed and pushed onto the ground and seeing no bystander intervening, Bob stepped up & demanded the attackers to leave the young women alone. Instead of relenting, these terrorists surrounded Bob; pinned him on the dirty sidewalk while straddling him; and brutally and repeatedly pummeled and kicked him. They also robbed him of his camera bag, which had almost $15,000 worth of equipment that was his livelihood!

Let’s show Bob and our community that being a Good Samaritan means we will help each other. Bob had the courage to try to help a stranger in need on the streets of San Francisco. You can now help Bob by showing that we got his back too! Thank you for your consideration and generosity!
