Following a standoff, San Francisco police shot and killed this man, who was the suspect in the shooting of Vapor Room owner Martin Olive. The alleged shooter's identity and motive are not yet known.

The San Francisco Police Department revealed today that Cheasarack Chong, the man who was caught on video shooting a Tenderloin shopkeeper on Jan. 27 and was subsequently shot and killed by police officers, had fired at officers after they shot a less-lethal projectile at him.

During a virtual town hall meeting Tuesday afternoon, the department showed jarring surveillance footage of Chong rolling up on an electric bicycle outside 81 Ninth St., the building where he lived and where victim, Martin Olive, operated his dispensary on the ground floor.

In the video, Chong steps off the e-bike and approaches Olive, gun in hand. Olive is turned away, looking at his phone. Chong then shoots Olive six times, at one point standing over Olive and shooting downward.

As Olive lay on the ground, onlookers rushed to help. One took off his shirt and pressed it to Olive’s head to slow the bleeding. Olive, miraculously, survived the attack. He walked out of the hospital today.

Police today said Chong had three handguns, a bulletproof vest, a long gun and multiple magazines in his apartment, where he holed up during the standoff.

Chong, according to his family, struggled with mental illness for years. Family members had lost touch with the 34-year-old more than eight years ago and, in 2017, his face was posted on a missing persons Facebook group. In 2018, Chong was acquitted of attempted murder after he stabbed a man in what jurors determined was an attempt to fend off an attempted robbery.

In a half-hour presentation, Commander Mark Im detailed the sequence of events leading up to the police shooting Chong.

After the shooting, Chong entered 81 Ninth St. Meanwhile, several people called 911 to report the crime. One described Chong’s demeanor, saying “he shot him very casually.”

Police arrived minutes after the shooting. Olive, who was still conscious, described the alleged shooter as an Asian male with a black cap. After reviewing nearby footage, officers were able to locate the suspect’s location at 81 Ninth St., apartment 608, the address where Chong was registered to vote.

Multiple emergency units were deployed to the scene. For a couple of hours police tried, unsuccessfully, to get Chong to surrender.

After evacuating the premises, members of the police tactical unit and special team proceeded to the roof of the building to obtain a clear view of Chong’s apartment. Two 40mm foam batons — essentially a cartridge of foam and plastic, shot from a 40mm grenade launcher— were fired by one of the officers through Chong’s window in the hope of temporarily incapacitating him.

Chong returned fire. Officer David Edgerson, a member of the police’s tactical unit, then shot Chong with his rifle. It is unclear how many times Chong was hit.

Officers continued calling for Chong, but the subject did not reply. The department used a drone to gain visibility of the apartment and saw the man lying down, apparently unconscious.

The police unit entered the building and found Chong lying dead, in possession of a rifle. They also recovered his other weapons, ammunition and the vest.

  1. The sheer amount of hurt and pain that progressives have done to this country by opposing involuntary committment is astronomic.

  2. If he were black and transgender (Banko whatever), we would never hear the end of it.

But he’s Asian, and progressives hate Asians, so this is the end of it.
