San Francisco police officers detained two men and three teenagers on Tuesday around 5 p.m. for allegedly assaulting and attempting to rob a pedestrian near Angie’s Jewelry Store at 2386 Mission St., near 20th Street.

The mugging victim was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries around 6:30 p.m.

The suspects allegedly assaulted the victim and then ran into the jewelry store, according to several businesses. A worker at the jewelry store said a couple of guys ran into his store. He thought they were customers until police surrounded the area and took the suspects into custody.

At least four police SUVs were parked on Mission Street. Pedestrians watched from the bus stop on the east side of the street as officers arrested several young men.

The San Francisco Police Department said in an email that “Officers developed probable cause to arrest 2 adult males and 3 male juveniles for multiple charges, including robbery.”

In its account, the SFPD wrote, “Officers were advised that the victim was approached by multiple suspects. As the suspects surrounded the victim, a suspect robbed the victim’s jewelry. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was medically assessed on scene. “

A community member standing outside of Milagros de Mexico, a store on the corner near where the alleged crime occurred, said he heard that a group of “bandits” attempted to assault a man and steal his neck chain. He and others estimated that five young men were arrested, but this could not be confirmed.

Police spoke with the alleged victim on the sidewalk, who seemed startled but cooperative. Businesses in the area closed down shortly after the incident occurred.

“Although arrests have been made, this is an open and active investigation,” the SFPD wrote.

  1. Now you’re going to tell us “crime is down.”

Strongarm robbery in broad daylight, in my neighborhood. IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. I won’t feel safer if you gaslight me with statistics.

    1. Hi Leon —

The existence of crime does not indicate we are undergoing a crimewave. It would be wrong to tell the victim of this crime that, statistically, this is on decline. It would also be wrong to state that crime must be on the rise because this single crime occurred.

      Is this complicated?

      1. I would rather have a survey of how people felt, if they felt safe rather than statistics. We all know that when you call the police, they deflect & redirect you to an online portal to report the crime and get the police report digitally a few days later. How many crimes go unreported is a mystery.
