From our friends in the Mission.

Today is our last day of our Indiegogo fundraiser for “Setting the Word on Fire,”  our documentary about Alejandro Murguia and other activist poets. First of all, we’d like to say thank you very much to those of you who have already donated to help raise the money we need for post production. If you are feeling especially generous and can afford it, we would greatly appreciate any additional donation!  http://igg.me/at/wordsonfire

For those of you who have been thinking of donating but haven’t done so yet, you have until midnight tonight! We would like to ask all of you, whether you have donated yet or not, to please contact ASAP anyone you know who you think might be interested in supporting our project and encourage them to make a donation on this our last day.  http://igg.me/at/wordsonfire

We want to think all of you very much for your interest and support. We will keep you updated as we move into the post production of the film. Your gift will ensure Alejandro’s work is shared with many.

With our deepest appreciation,

Lou Dematteis

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019 when I retired. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.
