Modern Times Bookstore will host a talk on Friday by a Mexican journalist who covers the Chiapas state in Mexico and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, a revolutionary group that has operated against the Mexican government from Chiapas since 1994.

Hermann Bellinghausen, the journalist, will speak Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the bookstore on the current political climate in Mexico.

From Modern Times:

Hermann Bellinghausen is a Mexican poet and journalist who covers the state of Chiapas and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation for Mexico’s renowned left-wing newspaper La Jornada. He is the editor of Ojarasca, a supplement to La Jornada devoted to indigenous culture and writing. In 1995 Hermann won Mexico’s National Journalism Award, but declined to accept the prize as a protest against the treason of president Zedillo against the Zapatistas.

He is also the recipient of the Anna Seghers literary prize and the Roque Dalton Medal, and was the editor of the magazine Nexos until 1993. His books of poetry and prose include La hora y el resto, De una vez, Aire libre, Crónica de multitudes, Encuentros con mujeres demasiado guapas, Ver de memoria and most recently, Trópico de la libertad and Memorial del astronauta. In 2008 he published Acteal, crimen de Estado, a reconstruction of the paramilitary violence that led to the infamous massacre in 1997. He is currently writing about the Mexican  political and social situation in Desinformémonos, La Jornada, Ojarasca and other independent media.

On Friday, June 3, Hermann will read poetry in the Mission District and share his thoughts about the current Mexican political and social situation.
