Our friends at the Mission Bicycle Company have taken a second look at the Super Bowl commercials and what they have to say about, gulp, us.

As you know, the Super Bowl of football is also the Super Bowl of commercials. Nearly 25% of this year’s ads were for cars, ads that often traffic in unnaturally empty streets and dangerous behavior. You know, a lot of this:

* Professional driver, closed course

Throw in some loud sound effects and good ol’ fashion sexism and you’ve got yourself a cliché car commercial.

Let’s be clear, this is not an anti-car or anti-motorist tirade. It is however critical of the advertised version of cars and the streets they occupy. That version is not only deceptive, it’s lethal. We picked 3 different ads and asked ourselves, what are they really trying to say?
