From the folks at Midnight Express:

I am writing you to let you know about our brand new bus transportation service for those who enjoy a night out in San Francisco but want to get home to the South Bay after last call. It is called MidnightExpress.

Currently, there is a huge hole left by the public transportation providers during the late-night hours. People who live in Silicon Valley or San Jose and travel to the city for a night out have to make it to the Caltrain station before midnight or they are stuck getting a hotel room, crashing on a couch, paying an exuberant amount for a taxi/uber/lyft or end up driving home after drinking. Our new transportation service will solve this problem. We are providing affordable, safe and comfortable transportation back south on premium motor coaches.

Our first bus will be running this upcoming weekend (12/20); leaving at 2 a.m. from the 4th St. Caltrain Station. It will drop off at Caltrain stations in Palo Alto, Los Altos and Mountain View. We plan to quickly add more buses, departure times and pick-up/drop-off locations to better serve our customers as we grow.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019 when I retired. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.

  1. Do people just not know that SamTrans runs buses all night down the peninsula? It’s weird to not mention it at all…
