Javier Almanza, owner.

The tables are set, the menu is ready and the doors are open at Javi’s Mission Grill on Mission Street.

Javier Almanza, who takes care of the business at 2471 Mission St., and his brother Jose, who cooks, opened at 2471 Mission St. after working for years downtown at the Jazz Bistro and other restaurants.

They opened up on Mission Street three months ago because the rent was affordable, according to Javier, who declined to say exactly what he is paying.

The menu offers a traditional breakfast in the morning and more European-style dishes – Chicken Piccata, French Onion Soup – at lunch.  It closes at 6 p.m.

“We’re trying to offer something different,” said Javier Almanza. La Taza next door focuses on Latin American fare.

  1. These guys picked the worst place in the world to open this restaurant. I feel bad for them. La Taza is flat out awesome with it’s affordable yet delicious food and superb staff. They are seriously the nicest people and it’s such a well run business. They treat people so well that you never want to go anywhere else. I can’t see any regulars breaking away from la Taza to patronize these folks. Especially since it’s the same breakfast and just a little different for lunch. Regulars make or break the business in such a neighborhood restaurant.

I’m sure these guys are nice, but they need to go in a compete other direction. I hate seeing new small businesses fail and I’m worried that is where they are headed. I suggest they focus on more European style dishes or do something to differentiate themselves from La Taza.

    Javi, I’m rooting for you!

    1. Dude, what are you smoking? Menus.Totally.Different.

And as for La taza, it’s very cafe average, and now it’s over priced too. Might as well spend a couple shekels more and get a truly fantastic sandwich at pals takeaway or salumeria.

But I’ll give javis a shot! Looking for a moderatly priced lunchtime pasta place…maybe this I’ll be it?

    2. Well, I think there are lots of people who are much less impressed with La Taza than you are. I am sure they are nice etc. etc. but the food has never much impressed me. Too each his own.
