In response to serial surveillance by the NSA and friends, Yahoo announced yesterday it has fully encrypted traffic between its data centers. Said Alex Stamos, recently hired Chief Information Security Officer,

One of our biggest areas of focus in the coming months is to work with and encourage thousands of our partners across all of Yahoo’s hundreds of global properties to make sure that any data that is running on our network is secure. Our broader mission is to not only make Yahoo secure, but improve the security of the overall web ecosystem.

Thanks Alex.

And a round of polite applause for Yahoo. Enough with the telephone calls and meetings at the White House. It’s time for the other Titans of Tech to follow Yahoo’s lead.

HERE is Stamos’ Yahoo blog announcing the security steps which have been implemented and the others in the pipeline.
