Alemany and Farragut, the scene of a shooting at 3:10 a.m.

Update: 9:02 a.m.

SF Gate reports that a suspect has been arrested.

San Francisco police officers were seen leading a man away from an Outer Mission District neighborhood in handcuffs Thursday, hours after the SWAT team launched a search for a shooting suspect in the area, authorities said.

6:48 a.m.

Those helicopters that you are hearing overhead this morning at 6:30 a.m. are likely from a police SWAT team (or a news crew covering the incident) searching for a shooter involved in an incident at 3:10 a.m. at Alemany and Farragut in the Outer Mission.

Police reported that officers located one male victim in his 30s with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.

A SWAT team is now searching for a suspect. It is probably a good idea to avoid the area if you are driving to work this morning.

I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.
