Serious things are about to be afoot in Dolores Park: half the 16 acre park is closing for renovations on Thursday for over a year.
As you may have already read in the digital pages of this publication, the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department will be fencing off the north half of Dolores for 14 months. This side contains the big, flat play field, the tennis courts, and the preferred chill-zone of the PBR-swilling, affectionately known as “hipster hill.” While the official ground-breaking took place earlier this month, the renovations begin in earnest this Thursday, March 13.
For countless frisbee players, birthday picnic-havers, and cannabis-edible enjoyers, today is going to be the very last Sunday Funday for quite a long time and time is running out for the Dolores Park we’ve come to know and love. To chronicle this momentous event, this end-of-era date, we’ll be live blogging throughout the afternoon detailing how park-goers are saying farewell to their favorite patch of grass. Reporter Rigoberto Hernandez will be on the scene shortly to keep us informed as events unfold and we’ll curate the best social media posts throughout the day.
