It’s 7 a.m, 50° and headed to 56° with rain. Details for the next ten days are here.

Friends, family and community met last night at Bernal Park to honor Alejandro Nieto and to raise questions about what happened Friday night when he was shot and killed by police.

The planned expansion of the bike sharing program into the Mission and other neighborhoods has been put on hold thanks to the bankruptcy of Bixi, reports Curbed SF.

Mission Mission has this photo of a gutted Pop’s.     How many people looking at it are remembering good times? Bad times?  I had a drink in there with Kari and Vero before Vero gave a performance at the Galería de la Raza on Mission memories. I can’t find the piece that we did on that evening, but here is one from another evening.

I do remember Vero’s very funny story about being saved by a particular band.  Vero Majano, what was that band’s name?

And the April 4, Muni Diaries Live! Line up has been announced.  Get your tickets now!

I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still here.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

As founder and an editor at ML, I've been trying to figure out how to make my interest in local news sustainable. If Mission Local is a model, the answer might be that you - the readers - reward steady and smart content. As a thank you for that support we work every day to make our content even better.
