The mugging took place at 1 a.m. at 24th and Mission Street.

A 25-year-old man was standing at 24th and Mission streets at 1 a.m. today checking his phone when someone punched him from behind.

He fell to the ground and the suspect and an accomplice kicked the victim and took his wallet, cash and cell phone, according to the police report.

The suspects then fled on foot and no arrests have been made. The victim took himself to the hospital where he was treated for a black eye and a bump on the head.

Earlier police told Mission Local that often cell phones are swiped at the BART stations as passengers come onto the plaza checking for their messages. Basically, Mission Street is not a great place to check your phone.

Crime is trauma and the county offers different services. Here is a link to a page of services.

Victims of violent crime can contact the Trauma Recover Center at UCSF.

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019 when I retired. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.

  1. Keep the Mission dangerous and dirty and unsafe for white techies, that’s the way we like it! The hood ain’t a place to be checking your cell phone. This message brought to you by David Campos.

  2. It’s those damn tech buses. They make the deserving locals spontaneously angry. No wonder they steal shit.

  3. i think there should be a police unit stationed at 24th, especially in evening/night. And at 16th. Criminals take advantage of commuters waiting for transportation, and nothing is done about it.

    1. Right, you expect for the SFPD to actually be outside with people at night to protect them? You can’t write comedy like this!

  4. Whats SFPD doing about this? Undercover stings????Probably not since that would involve real police work and SFPD wouldnt want that.
