Sadness. I went to look at the time for Photobooth’s Sunday walk and discovered they are closing. Happily, their Sunday Walk is still on tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Mission Local covered Photobooth’s opening in August 2011. While we are unclear as to why the store is closing, they posted the following message on their site:

We hate to say it, but Photobooth will close on Sunday, March 30, 2014

Since Photobooth opened we’ve taken over 4,000 tintype portraits. We’ve sold hundreds of refurbished Polaroids and shown countless photographers how to get the most from these amazing cameras. We’ve taught workshops, thrown parties, and hosted 30+ gallery shows featuring local photographers working in traditional or alternative processes. Now it’s time for us to move on.

There’s still a lot happening between now and March 30th!

We’ll be shooting Tintypes until the very last day.
We’ve even added very limited one-hour and 14×17 tintype sessions with Photobooth co-founder Michael Shindler. Book your tintype appointment here. Use the same link if you have a Photobooth tintype gift certificate.

You can order Tintype reprints or high-resolution downloads.
If you’ve already had a Photobooth tintype, you can order enlargements or high-resolution digital copies. Deadline for all orders is March 30, 2014.   Order reprints and digital copies here or email reprints@photoboothsf.com for assistance.

Events!
Our super-popular monthly instant camera walk will continue, and the best is yet to come in our gallery. Check our calendar for more info.

You’ll be hearing more from us before the doors close, but right now we want to thank you, our Photobooth Phriends, and all of the photographic community for your support. We wish you all the very best for 2014.

Sincerely, your Photobooth staff,
Vince, Michael, Nathan, Niniane, Annie, Melissa, Kari, Katie, and Sara

Founder/Executive Editor. I’ve been a Mission resident since 1998 and a professor emeritus at Berkeley’s J-school since 2019 when I retired. I got my start in newspapers at the Albuquerque Tribune in the city where I was born and raised. Like many local news outlets, The Tribune no longer exists. I left daily newspapers after working at The New York Times for the business, foreign and city desks. Lucky for all of us, it is still there.

As an old friend once pointed out, local has long been in my bones. My Master’s Project at Columbia, later published in New York Magazine, was on New York City’s experiment in community boards.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how you make that long-held interest in local news sustainable. The answer continues to elude me.
