Eater SF has a list of the best new restaurants in the Bay — a list compiled by Eater’s friends from other publications. Alas, we were not among the friends, but I can see why as I have not heard of most of these restaurants — Cavalier, Fog City, Roka Akor — because I venture too seldom beyond the Mission.
Since no one is asking, my favorite opening of the year was definitely Linea Caffé on the corner of San Carlos and 18th Streets.
The coffee, salads and waffles are terrific and there is something completely charming about sitting outside on a sunny winter day.
I would not eat at Linea if the food wasn’t a draw, but it also helps that Anthony Myint takes $1 from each salad and gives it to the 350.0rg, a grassroots organization to solve the climate crisis. (Always a plus when a restaurant makes one feel virtuous).
Most irritating long-standing Mission restaurant problem? The line at Tartine Bakery. Surely after so many years in business and such genius bread, Tartine can figure out how to get its line moving faster — not fast-food fast, but do we have to dawdle so long? All of the other popular places — Craftsman and Wolves, Bi-Rite Market, etc. seem to have solved the riddle.
