Up to 30,000 prisoners have begun what could be the largest hunger strike in the history of California. The protest has been organized by a small group of inmates held in segregation at the Pelican Bay State Prison.

In other prison news, inmates in some California prisons were banned from photographing themselves because the photos were used as calling cards. As a consequence of the ban, the inmates were not able to send pictures to their families, which isolated them. The ban has been lifted thanks to civil rights groups.
