The Supreme Court decided today in a 5-4 vote that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional. The ruling ends the practice in which some states with a history of racial discrimination must receive clearance from the federal government before changing voting laws. The New York Times has a live analysis of the decision.

In other major Supreme Court news, the justices did not issue decisions today on Proposition 8 or on the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA.) They did signal, however, that rulings will come tomorrow. Read more on SF Gate, and brush up on the controversial cases at play here.
