A man is interviewed about a police shooting that took place early Sunday morning at 17th and Valencia streets.

Two people were hospitalized after being shot by a police officer early Sunday morning, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

At approximately 2 a.m., a group of people left a bar and were confronted by another group at 17th and Valencia streets. One individual drew what appeared to be a firearm, said Officer Gordon Shyy.

Officers responding to the scene saw a person pointing a firearm at one of the groups. An officer then shot the suspect and another person, Shyy said. The two people who were shot were transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It was later determined that the firearm was a replica.

The incident remains under investigation. As of 6:22 a.m., investigators remained on the scene talking to witnesses.

By mid-morning several news crews crowded the sidewalk on Valencia Street in front of Good Vibrations.

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave.

Update: According to the SFPD, one of the two individuals hospitalized had an air-powered firearm that was capable of discharging a projectile. Police Chief Greg Suhr is expected to hold a town hall meeting this week about the incident.

  1. I live in the building on top of the T-mobile store. I was actually up feeding my infant when we heard the 3 shots fired and saw the ensuing chaos occur downstairs.

We should wait for the full facts to come out in the investigation before finalizing any judgements. However, from everything I’ve read so far, I’m satisfied with judgment and actions of the police office, fake gun or no.

If someone was pointing a gun at me in a menacing fashion and a police officer was present, I’d want that officer to do his job and remove the threat.

It’s unfortunate the other person was hit and it will be interesting to see if that individual was merely an innocent bystander or something all together different.

Again, we should wait until the full facts come up, but from everything that’s been reported thus far, it seems like the officer was doing their job in challenging circumstances.

    1. Just wanted to back up your claim of 3 shots as some news outlets are reporting up to 15 shots because of the number of painted orange circles and/or little yellow cones. I live across 17th from the T-Mobile store, and I also distinctly heard 3 shots.

  2. Soo the pigs shoot wildly into a crowd hitting at least one innocent person. What brave big men SFPD are. No commands to drop the fake gun?! “Shoot first ask questions NEVER!”
SFPD = most dangerous thugs in town

    1. “Drop the fake gun?” …..seriously, you sound like an idiot. Do you seriously think that the anyone would ASK QUESTIONS when they have a gun pointed at them. police officer or not. Beside, what if the suspect did not understand English, real possibility in the Mission in a sanctuary city.

Since you sound like you know everything and Monday morning quarterback, did you attend the town hall meeting and make your feelings known? Perhaps you can provide a better way to patrol the streets?

    2. @ACAB: There is no way the police can be expected to distinguish a fake gun from a real one in a matter of seconds. Would you prefer that they wait until the perp kills someone until they shoot? If somebody was threatening to shoot you, would you want the police to wait?
If you consider our police force “pigs”, please leave the City and go live somewhere else. Law abiding citizens do not need people like you around. Your attitude sanctions violence and makes this City less safe. You are the problem. Put you two-bit ideology aside and learn to live in a civilized society.

    3. ACAB,
Interesting that you’ve chosen to make up your own “facts” in this situation. We don’t know what was said, and we don’t know if the “other person” was involved. I sure hope they were not an innocent bystander like you seem to already “know”.
The police have a tough job and they have to deal with all manner of people who rush to judgement about the situation without knowing all the facts. The reality is that none of us know all the facts yet (or even close to all of them), so it is reckless for you to start making these kinds of statements and accusations.
I sure as hell hope if some idiot is pointing a gun at me (real or fake) the cops don’t hesitate to take that person down.

    4. Were you there or maybe referencing another article? If so, could you please provide more details because “No commands to…” and “Shoot first ask…” are not mentioned in the article. I’m assuming you’re just assuming …or trolling.

      1. Thank you, Michael. We are all eager for more information, but assuming helps no one. Lets wait for more facts…

          1. it is worth noting that a nerf-dart gun could be considered an “air-powered firearm that was capable of discharging a projectile,” so we don’t really know much based on that statement.

    5. “Drop the fake gun”? Where does it state that the police knew the gun was fake. Don’t point guns at people and you won’t get shot. The perp deserved to be shot. As for the “innocent” person, if he was with the perp and not trying to stop him, then he might not be so innocent. You should be more outraged by all the lowlife scum crapping on our neighborhood on weekends, rather than criticizing the very people you would call in a heartbeat if your life was being threatened. Why don’t you go protest and smash the store front windows of small business and vandalize the cars of hardworking citizens. You know you want to, you little cowardly anarchist you.

  3. Not good. I hope they recover. Isn’t this right in front of the police station?

When violence happens outside of a bar at closing time, is it considered good journalistic practice to not name the bar? If so, are the reasons similar to the reasons juvenile suspects are not named?

    1. It appears the shooting took place in front of Good Vibrations. We do not know which bar the groups were coming from.

    2. My guess would be either Blondies, the Elbo Room, or maybe even Casanova. Those three bars attract a high concentration of bridge and tunnelers on weekends.

      1. Not really. Bridge/Tunnel is more at Skylark and Double Dutch. The bars you mentioned are people who live in Mission Dolores/Lower Haight/Polk.
