Hundreds of people gathered at Mission Dolores early Wednesday morning, many with roses for the Virgen de Guadalupe. Dec. 12 marks the annual celebration of the appearance of the Virgen in Mexico in the area of Tepeyac Hill.
A boy by the name of Juan Diego saw the Virgen on Dec. 12, 1531. The story goes that she asked the boy to ask the bishop for a church to be built there.
Mission Dolores has held a Virgen de Guadalupe mass and celebration every Dec. 12 since it was founded in 1797.

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin “Talking Eagle” was born in 1474. He was 18 when Columbus arrived in the West Indies, 47 when Tenochtitlan fell to the Spanish bring an end to the Aztec empire and 57 when he saw the Virgin on 1531. Details can be found in the Nican mopohua Spanish or English translation.
