On Nov. 6, voters will elect four members to the Board of Education and help shape the future of the San Francisco Unified School District, which now serves over 55,000 students a year.
Eleven candidates are running for the four open seats on the seven-member board. Included in the field are incumbents Jill Wynns, Rachel Norton and Sandra Fewer, all running for another four-year term.
Also vying for school board seats are seven newcomers: nonprofit administrator Gladys Soto, educator Beverly Ho-A-Yun Popek, nonprofit executive director Shamann Walton, pediatric healthcare coordinator Victoria Lo, early childhood educator Kim Garcia-Meza, education and workforce advisor Sam Rodriguez and Matt Haney, executive director of the University of California Student Association.
Board members’ key responsibilities include overseeing administrative and policy operations, approving curriculum, setting the district’s budget, confirming personnel appointments and appointing a superintendent of schools.

Be aware that when Kim Garcia-Meza mentions that she has two children in middle school, that school is the private Friends School, not a public school.
That disqualifies her for my vote.
