The building at the corner of Hill and Valencia streets that has housed KFC, Spork and Rice Broker got a new coat of paint last week. The red walls announced the coming of yet another new restaurant, Sugoi Sushi.

Yan Louie, front of house manager and server, said the restaurant will serve sushi, small plates and robata grilled items. The drinks menu will include wine, beer and sake. Plans call for a soft opening on Thursday, Aug. 18, with lunch and dinner served seven days a week.

“We want a high-quality, casual, but not expensive sushi restaurant,” said Louie.

Neighbors may have been slightly surprised to see a new restaurant going in, given longstanding plans to build condos on the corner. However, the lot has been tied up in the planning process since 2008, faced with opposition from the Liberty Hill Neighborhood Association. The architect for the proposed 12-condo building, Stephen Antonaros, said the earliest that groundbreaking could happen on the project is the spring of 2013.

Until then — sushi.
