At a press conference on Friday, Supervisor David Campos talks about the benefits of the Earn it! Keep it! Save it! program

Whether you like it or not, tax season has arrived.

People who earned less than $50,000 in 2011 can have their taxes prepared for free through the Mission Economic Development Agency’s Earn it! Keep it! Save it! program.

The program helps low- and moderate-income taxpayers keep the money they earn so they can spend it in their communities, said Maria Stokes of the United Way, the agency that oversees the program.

MEDA’s tax-preparation site is one of more than 200 throughout the Bay Area, and the program is growing. A few years back, fewer than than 75 people in the Mission used the program; last year, more than 5,000 participated. At a press conference on Friday to publicize the service, people were already waiting to get their taxes done.
