Home-cured bacon from Avedano’s. It doesn’t shrink, so the enormous slabs of bacon remain thick and lovely. I’m becoming addicted and just walked up to Cortland to buy some for dinner tonight. — Lydia Chávez
Grilled flatbread at Universal Cafe, which is consistently one of the best places to eat in the Mission. The topping changes every day, but it’s always enough for a meal — except for us. I had the heirloom salad, Lola had brisket, Mark lamb and pasta. No leftovers. Also, the waitress recommended a glass of wine that was perfect. I should have written it down. — Lydia Chávez
Walnut levain bread from Acme Bread Company, Belfiore fresh mozarella, arugula and Frantoia basil-infused olive oil from Rainbow. If you check Mission Loc@l’s kitchen on any given day, chances are these ingredients will be there. The bread is toasted, usually served with an arugula salad and office-made vinaigrette and shared among hungry reporters. — Hélène Goupil
Veggie sandwich at Mr. Pickle’s. Unless you’re a competitive eater, you should probably not eat the entire sandwich. It’s almost five inches high and filled with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and cheese. — Hélène Goupil
The Side Platter at Saint Francis Fountain. It was perfect for a cold day! I got mac and cheese, made with laurel leaves, it was delicious! It also included a veggie chili and a spinach salad, which is one of my favorite salads ever. They put toasted pecans and cheese and some delicious dressing on it. All $8. — Claudia Escobar
Dungeness crab and grits at The Front Porch. The grits were delicious, but it would have been nice if the server had warned us that she was going to bring an entire Dungeness crab. (I didn’t want to work for my food.) To drink, I had a King Cobra malt liquor tall can, just because they had it. When the server came by, she asked me if I wanted a glass. I said no. She replied: “It seems right.” — Rigoberto Hernandez
