A man was stabbed on Mission Street halfway between 16th and 17th early this morning, according to police. The victim flagged down Town Taxi #415, and driver Win Tunmaund pulled over to pick him up. The victim asked Tunmaund to take him to the hospital and then made a phone call.

“He called 911 from the back seat,” Tunmaund said, shortly after 1 a.m.

The cab was en route to SF General Hospital when police caught up to it at the corner of 17th and Treat and called an ambulance. Police cars and a fire engine blocked 17th as the victim was transferred from the cab to an ambulance that quickly arrived on the scene.

Officer Timothy Davis searched the back seat of Tunmaund’s cab with a flashlight and questioned the driver as the ambulance drove away. Davis said it appeared that the victim’s stab wound was not life-threatening.

“He was conscious and alert,” Davis said of the victim.
