Offering free Muni rides for youth is turning out to be much more costly than previously reported. According to the San Francisco Examiner: “The plan would cost at least $13.2 million annually — almost twice as much as an earlier projection — and wouldn’t be compatible with the region’s Clipper card, according to an agency study.”

The recently released study, by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, found that “the extra youth passengers would require Muni to expand its peak-time service by 25,000 to 37,000 hours, at the cost of $6 million. On top of that, the agency would have to purchase new vehicles to deal with its capacity issues. The Board of Supervisors’ study did not factor in any service increases.”

In food news, award season has officially begun. Nominations for the James Beard Awards are now open, and Michelin released its Bib Gourmand list of the best places under $40. A few Mission restaurants made the cut.

San Francisco history fans, the Bernal Heights Public Library is hosting a talk by transit and movie theater historian Jack Tillmany this evening.
