It’s 6:15 a.m., 54° and going to 64°. Details are here.
I took the picture above a little over a year ago, when the last of the details were being sandblasted into the new sidewalks along Valencia. Remember those new sidewalks, after all those months of construction hell? They were so wide and spacious that walking down them felt like switching from skinny jeans to enormous MC Hammer pants. With extra pockets. Happy first birthday, new sidewalks!
Thank you for indulging my interest in civic infrastructure. In your actual news:
Talk smack about San Francisco schools all you want, we still have a higher graduation rate than the state average. That’s the good news. The bad news is that both the state average and our average are pretty dismal. California adopted a new, more accurate method of tracking high school graduation and dropout rates, which has returned to us a more delicately nuanced set of numbers on how bad the state of our education has become. Statewide, nearly 2 out of every 10 students drops out of high school before graduation. In San Francisco? 1 out of 10.

As your doctor, we advise you to not go on BART without taking something to read in case of emergency. BART says that even though there was no protest yesterday, it still smells incipient protest in the wind. And don’t just think, “Oh, I’ll entertain myself with my cellphone,” because, as SF Appeal reports, BART police are shutting down cellphone service around BART when they sense danger. Bring something entertaining. Something entertaining that doesn’t need the Internet.
It’s almost the weekend. Or your weekend, anyway; I’ll be on duty.
