First, congratulations to the Mission Loc@l staff for winning a place as one of two national finalists in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards for news reporting for the series “How Clean are San Francisco’s Restaurants?”

Rigoberto Hernandez, an SF State intern who is now on his way to the Portland Oregonian, started this series during the summer and then a new group of reporters, led by Ashwin Seshagiri, assisted with data from EveryBlock and with incredible work by Fay Abuelgasim, J.J. Barrow, Lisette Mejia and Lauren Rosenfeld, picked up the story in the fall, adding tremendously with an amazing interactive map that first mapped restaurant scores in the Mission and then in every SF zip code.

The series produced changes in the Health Department’s website and its policies on informing the public when a restaurant is closed because of rats or other health violations.

Remember the July stabbing of the 40-year-old man in Dolores Park? Two of the suspects pled guilty in court and will serve from 16 months to two years in prison, reports the SF Examiner.

A story circulating in the Mexican press says one of the Navy SEALs who went on the mission to assassinate Osama bin Laden earlier this week is the American-born son of Mexican immigrants. According to Mexican news service Notimex, Martín Mejía, the father of Navy SEAL Ruben Mejia spoke with Los Angeles radio station 97.9 La Raza recently claiming that they were notified of their son’s involvement in the mission when a dozen soldiers arrived at their home carrying a folded flag. The senior Mejia said that upon seeing the flag, he and his wife began crying, thinking the worst, but were quickly notified that the soldiers were there to bring good news–their son had “fulfilled a great mission for our nation.”

Mejía went on to say that he has since spoken to his son who allegedly told him he was promoted to sergeant for completing the operation in which his team engaged and killed bin Laden. Mejia also noted that his son said his team disabled a helicopter, suffered a few bruises, and received praise from President Barack Obama who wanted to meet with the team as soon as possible. Mejía’s son also said he saw Bin Laden’s body when it was carried out of the highly guarded mansion now under control of the military.

Commenters on Think Progress have questioned the validity of the story saying that the military doesn’t bring folded flags to the homes of soldiers’ families unless the soldiers have died. They also noted that the senior Mejía said his son should receive a share of the $50 million in reward money the U.S. government offered to any civilian who captured bin Laden dead or alive. Since Mejía is military, however, he wouldn’t be eligible for the award.

One commenter on the message board Democratic Underground notes, “ANY SEAL would not acknowledge publicly being part of this operation. Furthermore, the Seals don’t even tell their families what they are doing.”

Indeed, According to Canada’s The Globe and Mail, the Navy SEALS is part of a special operations brotherhood that calls itself “the quiet professionals.”:

The Navy SEALs won’t confirm they carried out the attack, but their current chief, Rear Adm. Edward Winters, at Naval Special Warfare Command in California, sent an email congratulating his forces and cautioning them to keep their mouths shut.

If one of the SEALs fathers is speaking out of school, he may have just committed a big no-no.

Martín Mejia and his wife moved to the United States from Guanjuato, Mexico. They live in Los Angeles where Martín works as a machine operator. Their son Ruben Mejía was born in California. He enlisted six years ago at the Moreno Valley, California military base and has been in Afghanistan for seven months.

The Associated Press will not publish the names of the commanding officers, to protect them and their families from possible retaliation by militants for the bin Laden operation, which might explain why no major non-Latino news outlets have covered this story.
