According to an article in the Examiner, the Mission District is the most likely place to get your bike stolen in San Francisco.

Police department statistics from Jan. 1 to May 31 of this year show the Mission leading in stolen bicycle reports, with 30; SoMa was second, with 19.

The article quotes Timmy Bailey, sales manager for Valencia Cyclery, as saying he is not surprised that the majority of thefts occur in the Mission, because many people in the district have “’nicely built bicycles’ and thieves are well aware of that.”

Perhaps most disturbing of all, the stolen bikes often are not locked, but are taken from the owner’s property, according to Bailey.
