The man who fell off the rooftop of the Crystal Hotel at 2766 Mission St. was likely a resident, according to hotel management. Police have deemed his death suspicious.

Mita Shah, the wife of the hotel owner, said one of their regular lodgers did not show up to sleep that night — a rare occurrence for him. Once police identify the man from his fingerprints, they will confirm if it was the same man, she said.

Shahs described the missing man as in his late fifties. She added that he did not have any visitors and did not appear to have any problems with other tenants. He was a nice man, Shah said, who often brought fruit to her baby and spent time volunteering at a non-profit.

The resident came to the single room occupancy hotel through the San Francisco Homeless Outreach Team, Shah said. According to their website, the SF Hot Team helps “chronic homeless individuals in services that would get them off the streets and into stabilized situations.”
