When the economy gets tough, San Francisco City College holds a garage sale.
The two-year college, with 11 campuses across San Francisco including the Mission District, will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Balboa Reservoir on the Ocean campus.
It’s estimated that budget cuts have meant that some 800 classes are being dropped from the 2009-10 academic year. The funds collected in the one-day event will help save spring 2010 courses. Each course costs an estimated $6,000.
Since the board of trustees passed a resolution last month to hold the sale, the campus has been encouraging San Francisco residents to donate items. The community responded.
“We have lots of bicycles, books, children’s toys, lots of toys,” said Martha Lucey, dean of public information for the college.
Residents also donated electric lawn mowers, oil paintings, golf clubs and juice blenders, Lucey said.
“We expect people to be here as early as 6 a.m.,” said Lucey.
As of Thursday, some 37 vendors had signed up for stalls to sell goods, she added.
The fee for each stall is $35.
