SUMMARY:Manny’s: Monthly Chocolate Club at Manny's - Let's Explore Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Monthly discussions exploring and enjoying the wonders of chocolate! Bring curiosity and a chocolate to share! \nVenture with us into this endless and delicious topic. \nEach club session is a round table discussion in the Living Room\, at the back tables. \nWhat you bring to the conversation is curiosity and chocolate to share. Your contribution may be a bar or a confection\, a nostalgic favorite\, a sample of a rare cacao\, or even something you dislike and want to learn more about. Everyone please bring something to contribute to this beautiful community! \nHere are a few infrequently asked questions about chocolate: \n What actually is chocolate?\n Why does chocolate resonate so vividly with us in body\, mind\, and spirit?\n Cacao is called the “Food of the Gods” and is highly nutritious. What is science showing us about phytonutrients that benefit our health and well-being?\n How might we think about chocolate in contemporary culture and our shared human history? The oldest confirmed evidence of cacao use by our ancestors is approximately 5\,000 years ago. Our history and future with chocolate are worth discussing.\n We have a complex language for discussing wine—why not cacao and chocolate? \nWho is David? \nDavid has fifteen years of professional experience and a lifetime of enthusiasm for chocolate. As a chocolatier\, he makes delightful creations with amazing chocolate in micro-batches and offers them online and at farmers markets. His career in chocolate is rooted in pastry and chocolate production. Working with farmers\, researchers\, chocolate makers\, chefs\, and fellow chocolatiers\, he continually explores and enjoys the culture of chocolate. \nSpace is limited. Please reserve a seat at the table. \nMore information about David and chocolate can be found on his website: https://www.duchocolatier.com/

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Rite Of The Demon: Summer with Suzanne Ciani
DESCRIPTION:Eternal Research presents Rite of the Demon: Summer\, an evening of collaborative experimentation between contemporary artists and ancient oracles. Featuring LA’s Fierra Ex Machina\, inventors and developers of the Demon Box\, and joined by electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani\, this multimedia event melds storied mediums with cutting-edge transmedia to offer the key to the Oracle of Delphi’s origin: the powers of embodied vision. \nA synesthetic retelling of the Oracle’s visions through live-scored music\, dance\, and film\, Rite of the Demon: Summer invites a conversation with the unseen and unheard made audible and visible. Utilizing motion-reactive live projection\, audio-reactive lighting\, and handmade instruments such as the percussive Demon Harp\, Demon Viola\, and Demon Bells (made from antique artillery shells)\, this performance amplifies the timeless conversation between ear and instrument\, the aether and ourselves. Additionally\, Eternal Research shares our eternal gratitude that Suzanne Ciani will join Rite Of The Demon: Summer. An oracle in her own right for pioneering both the expressive possibilities of electronic music as well as women participating in music culture at large\, Ciani joins Rite to perform an immersive experience in her signature quadraphonic speaker array. \nFollowing performances in Los Angeles and New York City\, Rite of the Demon: Summer is the third iteration of Eternal Research’s ongoing seasonal series of intermedia events. More events to be announced at eternalresearch.com.

SUMMARY:Victoria Theatre: Bard Theatre presents BACCHAE
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EVENTS: \nJune 12th (Opening Night) – Join us for a special talkback after the show with translator Dr. Emily Wilson! (Included in ticket price). \nJune 13th – Join us for Community Night with specially priced discount tickets! \nThe BACCHAE is an electrifying Greek tragedy by Euripides\, which originally premiered shortly after his death in 405 B.C.E. The play centers around the proud and charismatic god of wine\, Dionysus\, and his reverent group of followers: the Bacchants. Threatened by their disregard for societal norms and gender roles\, the king of Thebes denies Dionysus’s godhood and seeks to destroy the Bacchants’ freedom and sacred\, ecstatic rituals. In return\, Dionysus shows him the bloody truth of what it means to deny the identity of a god. \nThis dance-forward\, world premiere performance of acclaimed classicist Dr. Emily Wilson’s vibrant translation focuses on themes of gender non-conformity\, bodily autonomy\, identity\, and community. So… “you would like to see what may disgust you?” \nWritten by Euripides / Translated by Dr. Emily Wilson\nAdapted by E.M. Ervolina & Edward Paddock\nChoreographed by Edward Paddock\nDirected by E.M. Ervolina

SUMMARY:Arc Gallery: Bewitched (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Arc Gallery and Studios present Bewitched\, curated by Priscilla Otani in the Project Gallery\, June 20-July 18\, 2026. Opening\, Saturday June 20\, 7-9pm.\nGallery Hours Wednesdays and Thursdays\, 1-6pm and Saturdays Noon-3pm \nFEATURED ARTISTS:\nRebecca Fox\, Julia LaChica\, Priscilla Otani\, Harumo Sato\, Na Omi Shintani\, Sandra Yagi and Fumiyo Yoshikawa \nFoxes appear in folklore all over the world: in the Americas\, Asia and Europe. In folk tales\, they are consistently portrayed as anthropomorphic creatures possessing human-like characteristics of tricksters\, shapeshifters\, vengeful seductresses\, spell-casters\, or messengers from the gods. They appear benevolent\, but their benign demenaor is a disguise for their malevolence. Bewitched is an exhibition by seven Bay Area artists who have personal affinities for the kitsune\, or the fox and have created works of art that represent various manifestations of this creature. Whether freaky or kawaii\, these foxes will no doubt leave a lasting impression of their magical power on the viewer.

SUMMARY:Red Poppy Art House: ICU (I See You) : A One-Woman Play
DESCRIPTION:A one-woman staged reading inspired by Iran’s “Women\, Life\, Freedom” movement \nPresented by \nRed Poppy Art House and Golden Thread Productions present a special theatrical reading of ICU (I See You) by Leyla Modirzadeh and Domenique Lozano\, a one-woman play performed by Bridgette Loriaux. \nABOUT THE PLAY \nRed Poppy Art House and Golden Thread Productions proudly presents ICU (I See You)\, a one-woman theatrical reading written by Leyla Modirzadeh and Domenique Lozano\, and performed by Bridgette Loriaux. \nInspired by Iran’s 2022–2023 “Women\, Life\, Freedom” movement\, ICU illuminates the events and human experiences of the uprising through the intersecting lives of five Iranian women. \nThe movement began after the death of Mahsa Amini while in the custody of Iran’s morality police\, sparking nationwide protests led by women and girls demanding dignity\, freedom\, and basic human rights. What followed was one of the most significant protest movements in modern Iranian history and a brutal crackdown by the regime. \nICU is a full-length play currently in development as part of Golden Thread’s New Threads Staged Reading Series. New Threads is Golden Thread’s annual staged reading series that engages its audience in the process of playmaking and allows writers of Middle Eastern and non-Middle Eastern descent an authentic and supportive space to develop work about the Middle East. \nBecause the events that inspired the work continue to resonate so deeply\, the artists wanted to share the story with audiences now rather than wait for the play’s final production. Portions of the performance will be presented with scripts in hand as part of the play’s ongoing development process. \nThe title ICU operates on several levels. It references the intensive care units where injured protesters sought treatment. It declares “I see you”—the fundamental demand to be witnessed\, recognized\, and remembered. It also evokes the eye itself and the power of sight\, which became a powerful symbol throughout the movement. \nThe play begins on a hopeful morning in the midst of the Women\, Life\, Freedom protests. From there\, it follows the aftermath of a single day and night\, tracing the lives of women whose futures are forever altered by the choices they make and the events they endure. \nThrough humor\, resilience\, grief\, friendship\, and extraordinary courage\, ICU explores what it costs to demand your humanity—and what it takes to keep fighting for it. With some laughs. \nWritten by: Leyla Modirzadeh & Domenique Lozano\nPerformed by: Bridgette Loriaux \nPresented by Red Poppy Art House and Golden Thread Productions. \nAbout Golden Thread Productions\nGolden Thread Productions is a San Francisco-based theatre company dedicated to exploring Middle Eastern cultures\, diverse perspectives\, and global immigrant experiences. Founded in 1996\, it is the first American theatre company devoted to the Middle East and its diaspora. Through new play development\, education programs\, and its signature ReOrient Festival\, Golden Thread champions underrepresented voices and creates powerful opportunities for cultural exchange\, dialogue\, and artistic innovation.

But since his girlfriend just dumped him\, tonight’s audition at “The Nowhere to Go but Up Club\,” is his perfect chance to debut The Saddest Night of Musical Entertainment in the History of the World. His accompanist\, Raoul\, sees this as a professional dumpster fire\, and sabotages Johnny’s plans by throwing in happy songs\, sharing mindfulness tips and changing minor keys to major ones. Like Daffy Duck being tortured by Bugs Bunny\, Johnny eventually loses his mind\, which might be what his audience wanted the act to be all along. \nThe show incorporates both classic torch songs and original jazz and blues tunes by Johnny Lonely. An early version of this show\, Johnny Lonely’s Unhappy Hour\, was first performed on “Blue Mondays\,” at the Paradise Lounge\, in San Francisco\, in 1987. Using a mixture of original songs in the vein of jazz standards with sad pop song covers\, Johnny has underwhelmed crowds at Dear San Francisco\, The 4Star\, Bird and Beckett\, Playground\, The Plush Room\, The Cowell Theatre\, The Rite Spot\, Noe Valley Ministry\, PS NBC\, Joe’s Pub\, (NYC) A revised version\, also directed by Cliff Mayotte\, premiered at The Marsh\, then toured to Australia\, was a Fringe finalist at the 1996 Adelaide Fringe Festival and received 5 star reviews at The Melbourne Comedy Festival. He hosted LIFEGAME for 8 episodes on TNN and was a recurring guest on the talk show\, Ask Rita\, with Rita Rudner. His solo show\, Johnny Lonely’s Unhappy Hour\, premiered at The Marsh\, then toured to Seattle and Australia. Marsh audiences may also remember him from Pulp Playhouse\, the improv-scripted hybrid he created\, and Seasonal Help!\, his multi-character Christmas show\, at the Bayfront Theater. His debut album\, The One and Lonely\, Johnny Lonely\, is available on BANDCAMP. https://brianlohmann.bandcamp.com/album/the-one-and-lonely-johnny-lonely \nJoshua Raoul Brody is a keyboard player\, accompanist\, and musical director. He has worked with Robin Williams\, Richard Montoya\, Rick & Ruby\, and many other acts that begin with the letter R. He currently runs the live karaoke show Plays His Favorite Beatles Songs AND Accompanies YOU On YOURS!\, plays with and arranges for the medium-sized big band Orchestra Nostalgico\, and is musical director for BATS Improv\, Johnny Lonely’s Unhappy Hour\, and probably The Residents’ (hey\, there’s another act that begins with R!) God In Three Persons if it ever plays again.\nAn early version of this show\, Johnny Lonely’s Unhappy Hour\, was first performed on “Blue Mondays\,” at the Paradise Lounge\, in San Francisco\, in 1987. SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Cybersentics Book Club - June 2026: Where the Turtles End
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area is pleased to host a new reading group\, the Cybersentics Book Club that will explore the human sensorium through the lens of art and technology. \nIn the first cycle\, Cybersentic’s reading list will center key themes related to the bidirectional flow of information between bodies and the environment. The outward perspective examines biofeedback\, while the inward perspective focuses on cyborg art. \nThis book club is a fit for artists\, makers\, researchers\, scholars\, engineers\, and anyone curious about the integration of technology and art. Join us as we investigate how to enhance our sensory experiences\, from biofeedback and sonification to embedding sensors that challenge our perceptions. \nOur group’s purpose is to cultivate a welcoming community that fosters knowledge-sharing and collaboration. Whether you’re seeking to connect with potential collaborators\, look for answers to pressing questions\, gain critical insights\, or engage in peer learning\, this is the place for you! \nCybersentics is organized and led by Gray Area Research Fellow Anastasia Chernysheva as part of the Biofeedback Art|Research Network (BARN). \nAn open-access library that accompanies this book club can be accessed here. \nSypnosis\nThis edition of the book club comes with a Midwestern flavor! In the article on our table\, “Where the Turtles End\,” Kevin Hamilton examines the Adaptive Reorganizing Automaton (ARA)\, an experimental device developed at the University of Illinois Biological Computer Laboratory (BCL) in 1960\, tracing how competing approaches to materiality in the history of computation illuminate a persistent tension between consciousness\, embodiment\, and control.\nDid you know that a small university town amid cornfields (Urbana) has been the home of second-order cybernetics\, early computing\, the first algorithmic music\, the Mosaic graphical web browser\, and so much more? Now you do — and there’s more to that story.\nFor this meeting\, we are trying something new: the session will be held in a hybrid format\, welcoming participants from outside the Bay Area to join us online. We are also hosting the article’s author\, Kevin Hamilton\, who will join us virtually as our first guest speaker.

Ervolina
