Hosted by series curator Sandra Garcia Rivera, September’s open mic will feature Sheila Maldonaldo and Paul S. Flores in addition to the local spoken word, music, and poetry legends.
Maldonado is the author of one-bedroom solo (Fly by Night Press, 2011), her debut poetry collection. She has received a Pushcart nomination, two Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grants, and was granted residencies at the Rockefeller estate in Pocantico Hills, New York and at Fundación Valparaíso in Andalucía, Spain. She teaches creative writing for The City University of New York and Teachers & Writers Collaborative. She holds degrees in English from Brown University and poetry from The City College of New York.
Flores is one of the most influential Latino performance artists in the country. A published poet, playwright and co-founder of Youth Speaks, his artistic work explores the intersection of urban culture, Hip-Hop, Spanglish and transnational identity. Flores was awarded the Center for Cultural Innovation grant for the world premier of his solo show You’re Gonna Cry currently on tour, and a NALAC Fund for the Arts grant for his newest play Placas, directed by Michael John Garcés, and co-commissioned by the San Francisco International Arts Festival and CARECEN.
