On Sunday, June 24, The Red Poppy Art House will be presenting a Kata-vento performance.
Kata-vento, or “wind catcher” in Portuguese, will be featuring music written for three flutes, guitars and percussion. Composer Carlos Oliveira was inspired by the music of his homeland, particularly the northeast of Brazil where he was born. Often evocative of the pifano flute, a rustic bamboo instrument from this area, Oliveira’s compositions also delve into realms of Jazz, Samba, Maracatu, Choro, and “Cholypso.”
Carlos Oliveira has opened for great Brazilian artists such as Sergio Mendes, Gilberto Gil, Jaques Morelenbaum Quartet, Rosa Passos, and has appeared at Yoshi’s, Kuumbwa Jazz, and the San Francisco, San Jose and Monterey Jazz Festivals. Kata-vento will tour California this summer and will appear at the San Jose Jazz Festival this August. To watch videos of Kata-vento and to find out more about the event, click here.
