San Francisco’s ROXIE THEATER returns with another sizzling week of sensational, sin-soaked cinema from the uninhibited pre-production code era — a time when films crackled with unbridled sexual energy and pulsated to the forbidden rhythms of larceny and lust. Over the course of seven days and nights you will have a rare opportunity to see FIFTEEN incredible Hollywood Pre-Code classics and curios on the big Roxie screen — many presented in beautiful 35mm studio archive prints and most not readily available on DVD! Programmed exclusively for the Roxie by Elliot Lavine.
Last year’s pre-code festival was one of our most successful ever and this year promises to be even more spectacular! Thrill to the garish delights that branded the pre-code era as one of Hollywood’s most provocative and creatively exciting periods in our cultural history. Sex, crime, and horror will all be on display in a shocking panorama of deliriously illicit behavior. Gorgeous 35mm studio prints, 16mm collectors prints and high quality digital transfers will mingle together in this once-in-a-lifetime extravaganza!
PLEASE NOTE: A major highlight of this year’s series will be a special tribute to screen star Lyle Talbot who, in a career spanning over sixty years, appeared in countless Hollywood films. His daughter, New Yorker staff writer Margaret Talbot has just published a wonderful memoir about her dad called “The Entertainer: Movies, Magic and My Father’s Twentieth Century.” We are thrilled to have Margaret as our very special guest on Thursday, March 7 to introduce the evening’s films (both featuring Lyle Talbot in pivotal supporting roles) and regale the audience with stories about her legendary dad. Margaret will be available for interviews in advance!
