SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Tasting Seminar: Spring Cheeses and Wines - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$90.00\nMember Price:\n$80.00 \nA 90-minute tasting seminar\, served with crackers to cleanse the palate. We highly recommend eating a heavy snack or meal before arriving. This class is limited to 24 students over age 21. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nIt’s spring\, and the green Sonoma hills are dotted with wildflowers and baby animals bouncing about their pastures. Spring is when young goat and sheep’s milk cheeses are their liveliest\, and buttery cow’s milk cheese reflects the freshness of the fields. In other words\, it’s the best time of year to enjoy these young and creamy cheeses – and the wines that love them! \nWe’ll use spring as a touchpoint for talking about cheese seasonality and feeding versus breeding. Come taste fresh local cheese from as close as Point Reyes\, as well as international wheels that can’t help but charm. As for wine\, we’ll pair our selections to un-oaked whites\, crisp rosé\, and lighter red wines that have been waiting all winter for their time to come. You’ll enjoy 7 cheeses and 4 wines that sing the song of springtime! \nBottles of wines sampled in class will be available for purchase\, so bring a credit card and a bag to take home your favorites. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to participate\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nKirstin Jackson\, author of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession. Kirstin’s specialties include wine and cheese tasting seminars and cheesemaking classes.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Tell Your Coming Out Story
DESCRIPTION:Coming Out for most queer/LGBTQ people is one of the most powerful moments of our lives. It is the moment that usually comes after a long time of soul-searching and coming to terms with owning and accepting who we are. And for many the decision to share our truth with the world\, our families and our friends can be terrifying\, exhilarating\, dangerous\, liberating\, painful\, joyful\, even funny and it can be all of these things. \nEven today being queer in this world remains for some radical and dangerous. Some of us are accepted fully\, some of us discarded by families\, thrown out of our homes\, churches\, etc. Some are welcomed with open arms. \nBut for sure Coming Out is an act of courage that transforms one’s life and the lives of those we love. \nCome hear some stories. A few tears\, some laughter and a healthy dose of awe in our fellow human beings. We are curating a diverse group of storytellers and hoping to give space for those who attend to share a bit also.

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Sustainable Gardening Series: Summer 2023
DESCRIPTION:June 10th\, 17th and 24th – Saturdays from 10am to 12pm. Cost: $30 for the full three-part series\, and receive a $10 gift card at each workshop. Sponsored by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission \nThe Introduction to Sustainable Gardening series is a three-part workshop series designed to help you transform your yard into a thriving\, sustainable garden. This course will teach you everything you need to know to nurture perennial gardens that conserve water\, provide beauty\, and attract pollinators and beneficial insects. \nSan Francisco is a beautiful and unique city\, with year-round mild temperatures and dry\, foggy summers. Learn what plants are adapted to our coastal climate and grow without the need for toxic pesticides or large amounts of water. This course will focus on native and drought-tolerant ornamental gardens but will cover broad topics that can also apply to vegetable gardening. \nThe full series is $30\, but you will get $10 gift cards to the Urban Farmer Store at each workshop (for a total of $30 in gift cards if you attend the two workshops). \nRegistering will sign you up for the full series of three workshops. Please only register if you plan to attend all three sessions. \nSERIES SUMMARY: \nPart I: Sustainable Garden Design This workshop will teach you how to design a beautiful\, functional\, and thriving home garden space. San Francisco urban gardens come with all sorts of unique challenges (fog\, wind\, steep hillsides\, sandy soil) and it can be difficult to know where to start. Instructor Ellyn will provide information to help you evaluate and design garden spaces and choose plants to match the space\, a principle called “Right Plant\, Right Place”. \nPart II: Water-Wise Gardening This workshop will take a more detailed look at the many beautiful plants that grow well in San Francisco and how you can care for them without using lots of water. Even with San Francisco’s dry and foggy summers\, there is an amazing palate of climate-appropriate plants that will thrive here with little or no summer water so that you can conserve water and save on your bill. Instructor Ellyn will teach you about all of this and also about how to water your plants properly and group them by similar water needs to help them reach their full potential. \nPart III: Organic Pest Control Learn how a healthy and biodiverse garden can thrive without the use of pesticides. Ellyn will discuss the notion that most plant health problems are caused by poor growing conditions or improper planting\, and that pests and diseases may be secondary problems. Plant health care involves a combination of strategies including monitoring\, and you’ll learn strategies to attract beneficial insects\, and keep pests\, diseases\, and weeds at bay naturally. \nInstructor Ellyn Shea is a Bay Area gardener\, garden coach\, Certified Arborist\, consultant\, and educator. She is a longtime Garden for the Environment teacher and supporter and shares her extensive gardening knowledge in this workshop series. \nCOVID-19 information: \n GFE Mask Guidelines: Masks are optional for vaccinated visitors (workshop participants\, volunteers\, students etc.) and required for unvaccinated individuals. Our staff is fully vaccinated and boosted. Thank you for continuing to keep the garden a safe and open space for everyone!\n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

DESCRIPTION:Tickets – https://odcsf.my.salesforce-sites.com/ticket/#/events/a0S5b00000E0zcIEAR \nAbbale\, a dance-theater memoir\, “deftly braids three stories\, each complexly colored with nostalgia and reflection”: \n3 fatherly relationships\, spanning 3 decades and 3 different cultures are woven together as one man tries to understand just what it means to fill Daddy’s shoes. With compelling nuance and deep introspection\, dance and theater collide through a series of moving stories and provocative choreography\, getting at the heart of being a child\, a lover\, and a creator. \n“Pearson is deeply intentional with each sentence\, just as he is with each meaningful movement — that’s what makes this piece work […]\nThere is full-body commitment in everything he does.” \n– Celine Kiner\, LA Dance Chronicle \nFREE WORKSHOP\nJoin us Saturday\, June 17 from 11am – 1pm\nA workshop led by Bodies in Play founder Andrew Pearson\nOn Stage @ The ODC Theater

SUMMARY:Creativity Explored: Wonderful Blackiful People
DESCRIPTION:Join us to commemorate the launch of Wonderful Blackiful People: Bay Area Changemakers A to Z\, a newly published book by Blackiful\, a cohort of Black artists at CE. The book highlights 26 Black changemakers who\, through their remarkable lives and work\, have each had a hand in shaping Bay Area history. Blackiful artists created portraits of each changemaker to accompany their biography\, recounting the invaluable contributions of these notable Black figures. \nThe accompanying group exhibition\, on view at CE’s second studio in Potrero Hill\, features twelve portraits from the book self-selected by Blackiful artists. Portraits include civil rights activist William Byron Rumford; teaching artist and sculptor Horace Washington; educator and former Black Panther Ericka Huggins; queer\, nonbinary multimedia artist Ayana “Yanni” Brumfield; pioneering Afro-futurist musician Idris Ackamoor; and beloved San Francisco poet Q. R. Hand\, among others. \nTaken together\, the book and exhibition represent the culmination of more than a year of Blackiful working together\, conducting research\, writing\, editing\, revising\, drawing\, painting\, sketching\, dreaming\, laughing\, singing\, arguing\, talking over one another\, and ultimately savoring the countless challenges and rewards of collaborative work. Blackiful strives to reciprocate the gift of these changemakers’ activism\, their artistry\, their organizing\, and their care by amplifying their stories. \nBook Launch Party and Opening Celebration\nJoin us for an afternoon of food\, music\, and art to celebrate Blackiful’s newly published book and concurrent exhibition\, Wonderful Blackiful People. The exhibition is on view at Creativity Explored’s second studio in Potrero Hill through September\, by appointment only Monday through Friday.\nFree\, all ages welcome!\nSaturday\, June 17\n12:00 – 4:00 PM\nCreativity Explored II\n1 Arkansas Street\, SF
