It is the moment that usually comes after a long time of soul-searching and coming to terms with owning and accepting who we are. And for many the decision to share our truth with the world\, our families and our friends can be terrifying\, exhilarating\, dangerous\, liberating\, painful\, joyful\, even funny and it can be all of these things. \nEven today being queer in this world remains for some radical and dangerous. Some of us are accepted fully\, some of us discarded by families\, thrown out of our homes\, churches\, etc. Some are welcomed with open arms. \nBut for sure Coming Out is an act of courage that transforms one’s life and the lives of those we love. \nCome hear some stories. A few tears\, some laughter and a healthy dose of awe in our fellow human beings. We are curating a diverse group of storytellers and hoping to give space for those who attend to share a bit also.

Sponsored by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission \nThe Introduction to Sustainable Gardening series is a three-part workshop series designed to help you transform your yard into a thriving\, sustainable garden. This course will teach you everything you need to know to nurture perennial gardens that conserve water\, provide beauty\, and attract pollinators and beneficial insects. \nSan Francisco is a beautiful and unique city\, with year-round mild temperatures and dry\, foggy summers. Learn what plants are adapted to our coastal climate and grow without the need for toxic pesticides or large amounts of water. This course will focus on native and drought-tolerant ornamental gardens but will cover broad topics that can also apply to vegetable gardening. \nThe full series is $30\, but you will get $10 gift cards to the Urban Farmer Store at each workshop (for a total of $30 in gift cards if you attend the two workshops). \nRegistering will sign you up for the full series of three workshops. Please only register if you plan to attend all three sessions. \nSERIES SUMMARY: \nPart I: Sustainable Garden Design This workshop will teach you how to design a beautiful\, functional\, and thriving home garden space. San Francisco urban gardens come with all sorts of unique challenges (fog\, wind\, steep hillsides\, sandy soil) and it can be difficult to know where to start. Instructor Ellyn will provide information to help you evaluate and design garden spaces and choose plants to match the space\, a principle called “Right Plant\, Right Place”. \nPart II: Water-Wise Gardening This workshop will take a more detailed look at the many beautiful plants that grow well in San Francisco and how you can care for them without using lots of water. Even with San Francisco’s dry and foggy summers\, there is an amazing palate of climate-appropriate plants that will thrive here with little or no summer water so that you can conserve water and save on your bill. Instructor Ellyn will teach you about all of this and also about how to water your plants properly and group them by similar water needs to help them reach their full potential. \nPart III: Organic Pest Control Learn how a healthy and biodiverse garden can thrive without the use of pesticides. Ellyn will discuss the notion that most plant health problems are caused by poor growing conditions or improper planting\, and that pests and diseases may be secondary problems. Plant health care involves a combination of strategies including monitoring\, and you’ll learn strategies to attract beneficial insects\, and keep pests\, diseases\, and weeds at bay naturally. \nInstructor Ellyn Shea is a Bay Area gardener\, garden coach\, Certified Arborist\, consultant\, and educator. This is especially true in older age when staying socially connected becomes challenging. The human-animal friendship has proven health benefits in older age\, from staving off depression to supporting daily exercise to guiding us when our eyesight diminishes. SUMMARY:Creativity Explored: Wonderful Blackiful People
DESCRIPTION:Join us to commemorate the launch of Wonderful Blackiful People: Bay Area Changemakers A to Z\, a newly published book by Blackiful\, a cohort of Black artists at CE. The book highlights 26 Black changemakers who\, through their remarkable lives and work\, have each had a hand in shaping Bay Area history. Blackiful artists created portraits of each changemaker to accompany their biography\, recounting the invaluable contributions of these notable Black figures.  \nThe accompanying group exhibition\, on view at CE’s second studio in Potrero Hill\, features twelve portraits from the book self-selected by Blackiful artists. Portraits include civil rights activist William Byron Rumford; teaching artist and sculptor Horace Washington; educator and former Black Panther Ericka Huggins; queer\, nonbinary multimedia artist Ayana “Yanni” Brumfield; pioneering Afro-futurist musician Idris Ackamoor; and beloved San Francisco poet Q. R. Hand\, among others. \nTaken together\, the book and exhibition represent the culmination of more than a year of Blackiful working together\, conducting research\, writing\, editing\, revising\, drawing\, painting\, sketching\, dreaming\, laughing\, singing\, arguing\, talking over one another\, and ultimately savoring the countless challenges and rewards of collaborative work. Blackiful strives to reciprocate the gift of these changemakers’ activism\, their artistry\, their organizing\, and their care by amplifying their stories.  \nBook Launch Party and Opening Celebration\nJoin us for an afternoon of food\, music\, and art to celebrate Blackiful’s newly published book and concurrent exhibition\, Wonderful Blackiful People. To fully delve into lamination\, the technique that creates the flaky layers that define these pastries\, we invite you to a two day workshop with Jennifer\, our resident baking instructor. \nOn the Day One\, you will work in teams to learn how to laminate a yeasted dough and allow your dough to rest overnight. Return on Day Two\, revisit your doughs\, and transform it down three pathways: making kouign amann\, a Breton treat with a crunchy caramel crusts\, making croissants\, both classic and filled\, and making danishes\, shaping and filling them to make variations.
