Image shows woman with feathers
A woman puts feathers into a bird sculpture as part of an altar for the dead. Many people wrote messages to their loved ones on the feathers.

Last night droves of people came out to celebrate Día de los Muertos, the holiday that honors those who have died and a Mission District staple since the 1970s. There was a festival of altars in Garfield Square in homage to loved ones and a procession that started on 22nd and Bryant streets, then proceeded down 24th to Mission Street and back.

Check out our photo gallery of the event and meet Amber Nelson and Amacker Bullwinkle, who shared stories of friends and loved ones who have died.
