The San Francisco Medical Examiner has identified the man who died a “suspicious death” on Guerrero Street on Friday as Damon Bruner, 44, of San Francisco.

The police department has not released any details about the death, stating only that is still under investigation.

Police responded to a call about a body inside an apartment on the 900 block of Guerrero Street at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The medical examiner and several police officers remained at the apartment building until late in the evening.

Bruner was a chef at the Doctor’s Lounge restaurant in the Excelsior District. He is survived by three sisters and a teenage daughter, according to family friend and former boss David Henry.

His dog was released to a friend, according to an employee of Animal Care and Control.

News of Bruner’s death has put some neighbors of the quiet block, which is lined with historic Victorian homes, on edge. The death is the most serious incident that Marsha Friesen, a 10-year-resident, can recall.

“This is usually a quiet block,” she said. “[The death] is the worst thing that’s happened on this block.”

Crime statistics from the past month show that the only calls for service have been for reports of disturbing the peace, a sexual assault and a burglary.

  2. I have known Damon for over 13 years. He was one of the most generous and gentlest people I have ever met. The culinary world has lost a giant. This is very distressing news. I’m glad someone is taking care of his pooch. If anyone has any other information about this feel free to contact me.
