Public Bikes, a San Francisco-based company with a distribution center and a new pop-up shop in the Mission, announced a voluntary recall of 4,100 bicycles for safety reasons.
The company ordered the recall after several customers reported that their pedals cracked and broke. No injuries have been reported.
The recall involved 18 models of women’s and men’s bikes sold from April 2010 through January 2012 for between $500 and $1,250, according to a release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Customers who have bikes with badge numbers 1-5843, 5845, 12560, 20743 and 20757 are urged to stop using the bicycles immediately and contact Public Bikes.
“We had a couple people came to us with a very strange kind of failure on the pedal,” said Brad Yule, a customer service representative with the company. “We thought it was extremely strange. We did some investigating and found a problem.”
The company opened a pop-up shop today at Harrington Galleries, on Valencia and 17th streets.
