It’s the last day of the year and I’ve been running around with this sense of urgency about tying up loose ends and clearing out the wreckage of the past before the clock turns to midnight. This year, I’ve learned how to tell the difference between the real deadlines and the ones that are self-imposed. I’ve learned how to tell and hear those uncomfortable truths and appreciate those little things that end up making a world of difference.
Taking on this walking assignment is one of those small things that make a world of difference. It’s been a fun way to get to know my new neighborhood and support a publication that is doing great work for our community. It’s easy to see how this neighborhood has transformed and is still experiencing transition, but even still, we have reminders of the community’s historic culture. We have high end flats next to buildings that have been rent-controlled for decades, celebrated graffiti culture meshed with high end luxury lifestyles, and old neighborhood hangouts frequented by young professionals making healthy salaries.
It’s the last day of the year, but this walk reminds me that I don’t have to let go of the past even as I look to embrace the changes yet to come.
