Although it’s usually impossible to know what happened in any particular car-mows-down-human story, the dramatic increase in these events correlates with increased smartphone use while driving.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, over 3,000 Americans /year are killed and 400,000 /year injured by “distracted driving” (also known as iphone addiction).

There’s a simple technological fix: smartphones should become inoperable when moving at car speed. This is trivial to implement since geolocation is baked into the phones. Alternatively, new cars could be required to emit a signal which disables the devices.

It’s going to take a massive class action lawsuit to make this happen. Like the tobacco companies which killed millions, the makers of addictive pocket computers will only be motivated by multi-billion dollar penalties.
