We were just talking about line cooks trying to hold on in the Mission yesterday. Well, surprise, surprise: San Francisco may be a restaurant town, but chefs are increasingly learning they can’t afford to rent here — moving onto cheaper locales across the country or taking jobs at — gasp — tech company cafeterias. (And if my recent grumpy move to the East Bay is any indication, pretty soon there will be no one to write the hyperlocal news articles either.)
Folks, you know the San Francisco rent crisis has officially arrived when The Voice of Russia has deigned to cover it, and Mayor Ed Lee calls it a “huge, huge topic.” What about Twitter apartments, they’re supposed to save us by stuffing us into matchbox bedrooms, right? New studies show that living in micro-apartments has averse psychological side effects — increasing domestic violence and substance abuse. Small spaces can also can be wearing for young children — decreasing their concentration and making it more difficult to study. Grumpy if we go, crazy if we stay.
From the crime annals: One lady in an even more uncomfortable tiny living space — a tent on the 200 block of 13th Street to be exact — was awoken by a voice calling her name on Christmas around 7:35 a.m. If this sounds like the opening scene to a horror movie, your suspicion is about to be confirmed. Poking her head out, she was then stabbed by a female attacker, who she then ran down and detained until the police could arrive. Both women sustained injuries.
We promise this next one has nothing to do with housing: Alert, alert! The SFPD will be conducting DUI checkpoints across the city tonight from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., so put a brake on the holiday cheer, will ya?
