Amazon confirmed today that it has launched its grocery delivery service in San Francisco, as we speculated earlier in the week after seeing the delivery vans about town. Customers can now sign up for Amazon Prime Fresh, a $299-a-year program that includes membership to Amazon Prime and access to grocery delivery (you can try it out now with a 30-day free trial in select zip codes).

Amazon doesn’t fail at much, but I think this one is a dud. They’re charging $299 per year for the service, and their groceries are reportedly more expensive than regular grocery stores. There are too many cheaper alternatives.

  2. I’ve been very excited about this… especially if Amazon Fresh allows for reoccurring deliveries like they do with household supplies!

It does sound a little pricey compared to current options like Safeway delivery, but if they add enough features beyond what the competition offers, I could see it being worth paying a premium.
