The New Yorker’s Currency blog explores the Mission’s efforts to preserve Valencia Street as a “‘wildlife sanctuary’ for independent boutiques, bars and restaurants” ahead of the Oct. 9 Board of Appeals rehearing.

Are one-off designer bike shops all that different from chains like Jack Spade? When it comes to the price point, maybe not — but the group Keep Valencia Local continues the fight to keep the neighborhood un-chained.

  1. Yet the Mission District has an overwhelming amount of Verizon stores, McDonald’s, Western Union check cashing joints, Walgreens, Big Lots, & the list goes on.
    On the other hand, if a Peet’s, Starbucks would move into the area, that block would improve, other good businesses would follow, crime would go down.
