Police said it happened on 21st and Valencia streets. We’re trying to get more information and will update this story. Thanks, Helene

It was on 21st street, between Valencia and Guerrero, just a few steps up the hill. I passed a young latina that was hyperventilating in front of Ritual, wondered what the heck was happening. Minutes later, the crime tape was up blocking off 21st street.

Great. The gangs are working their way west. Maybe something will be done about them now?

There is a meeting at the Mission police station the last Tues. of every month. If you are as concerned as I am about what the police are doing.

I heard she was pregnant and that not only was she stabed but also slashed ear to ear.

i missed the action and was there on 21/valencia at the time. if anything, i noticed how quiet it was on the street. the parklet was empty. some artists were setting up a window display at ATA.

Maybe Heather should move further west by the Great Highway.

That….doesn’t even make sense? My point being that I live deep in gang territory, and seemingly not much is done about it. If the shootings and stabbing are now happening on Valencia and points west (where lots of white people live), perhaps that community will encourage the cops to take more definitive action. Oh, and I’m moving to Portland in a few months, so good luck with all of this.

      • Heather, you and Portland deserve each other. Have fun!

So are you two saying it’s ok that she was stabbed because she doesn’t live by the Great Hwy but in the Mission?.

        • Heather

I…..wow. Perhaps you’re not smart enough to understand what I’m saying. Perhaps I’m not explaining myself clearly enough. Either way, let me take the time to elaborate. It’s a fucking tragedy that this shit happens. I’m tired of it. But I’m more tired of almost nothing being done about it. My point, if you would pull your head out of your ass long enough to listen, is that in this city tragic things that happen are paid more attention to in neighborhoods that house more affluent people. I wish it weren’t true, but it is. I’ve lived in San Francisco for eight years: five years in the TL and three years in the Mission, and I’ve seen first hand how this plays out.

I’m moving to Portland because I’m sick of people pissing on my front stoop and shitting on my street. I’m tired of being afraid to walk home at night. I’m tired of reading about people hurting, and sometimes killing, one another in my hood. So if you mean, by your smart ass comment, that I deserve more peace and less bodily fluids in my day-to-day, thanks! Thanks for your kind sentiment!

You are right Heather – i lived in the Mission for 10 years and all kinds of things are tolerated there that residents simply would not put up with in other districts. I still feel it is a great neighborhood on balance although we left cos we finally had enough of the noise and filth. Best of luck in Portland.

I don’t see anything wrong with Heather’s comments. I grew up in part around the Mission, and my Mexican grandmother lived there for decades. I remember when Valencia had gang activity in the 80s and 90s before it got gentrified and trendy (which non natives may not realize). I’ve seen all sorts of nasty fights around 24th street, plus drag racing and audible gunfire, and I hated living down there because it felt like a war zone that the city cared little about. Sounds like all she’s saying is that now that it’s affecting the white / affluent neighborhood maybe the city will get tough on gangs since they seemed to care little about the quality of life for latinos and poor people (same old story).

    • Heather

Thanks, Mia. That is exactly what I was saying.

    • fix it

The neighborhood never needed white or affluent people to get rid of the gangs and violence.

Get rid of the tolerance of them that is in the culture. Stop the revenue they get from their vice businesses to support themselves.

    • Well said. I’m with Heather, though I’m staying right here. The entire city wants to contain all the violence in this one little area and as long as the crime can be tagged as ‘gang related’ nobody seems to care. But I care. I don’t want to see anyone forgotten or left to die, even if they are in a gang. I don’t want to see more dead bodies. The people who turn against those of us who complain about latino kids dying in the streets try to push a racial wedge between us. Often times by Anglos. That is a crime.
It is ok to be against children dying in the streets. It is ok to be against robberies, shootings and stabbings. These are not hipster values. These are not Anglo values. These are human values every culture and race shares.
