Jose Torres waves a Giants flag along Mission Street where many fans turned to show their pride after the Giants defeated the Cardinals in the National League Championship Series.

As the sky opened up last night, it was difficult at first to distinguish the concussion of raindrops hitting Mission Street from the rumble of Giants fans pouring out of the nearby bars onto 29th Street to celebrate the Giants’ dominating win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The sounds of victory were soon clearly heard, however, as drivers honked their horns in triumph at the fans lining Mission Street. The Giants beat the Cardinals 9-0, advancing to the World Series against Detroit.

For longtime Giants fan Jose Torres, who was waving a Giants flag emphatically at the traffic at Mission and Cesar Chavez, the Mission District was the place to celebrate alongside other devoted fans.

“I’m a big Giants fan and I needed to come to the Mission, because there are a lot of faithful Giants fans who never gave up even when they were down to the Cardinals three to one in the series,” said Torres, who traveled from the Excelsior to be part of the action.

Mission resident Kevin Rodriguez said he was watching the game at home and knew it was time to head to 24th Street to celebrate as soon as Sergio Romo threw the pitch to Matt Holliday that resulted in a pop-up caught by Marco Scutaro to end game seven.

“The Mission is the heart of Latin culture in the city, and a lot of Latin people tend to play and enjoy baseball,” said Rodriguez.

Like others, longtime Giants fan Norma Maya came to the 24th Street BART plaza last night to be around fellow fans and celebrate the big win.

“The Mission is ground zero. Whatever happens in the Mission, the rest of San Francisco feels it, and Giants fans are feeling good tonight,” she said.

  1. Thank god I wasn’t there. The bullshit that happens in the Mission under the guise of sports fan-dom is beyond ridiculous. Burning mattresses anyone?
